*             ASML Physics Excursion

Thursday, the 21st of April @ ASML Eindhoven, 09:45 – 03:00

Every year ASML organises excursions to ASML, this time it is directed at students who are interested in physics. ASML is one of the world’s leading suppliers of lithography systems for the semiconductor industry, and what they’re developing today will be used by microchip manufacturers in years to come. So you could say they’re developing the future. ASML organize excursions especially for engineering students. You’ll see thought-provoking presentations as well as their latest technical insights. And to acquaint you with our daily technical challenges, they will present a typical ASML case. The program consists of a number of short presentations, a campus tour, a case study and informal drinks. It will be from 09.45 and the day will finish around 17.15.

Did you know the answer to last month’s riddle? If you did, congratulations! If not, the answer to the question was as follows:

The answer is one. Only one operation is necessary to be able to label all the bags correctly. Open the bag labelled ‘blue and red’. You know the bag is mislabelled, so it does not contain both colours. Depending on the colour of the rock you pick, you can know whether it is the ‘red’ or the ‘blue’ bag. Once one bag is labelled correctly, you only have to switch the labels of the other two, and then all bags will be correctly labelled.

The New Riddle is as follows:

The parking lot has numbered parking spaces. The above image shows an area in the parking lot. As can be seen, five spaces are free and one is occupied by a car. What is the number at which the car is parked?

Book: Jonathan Livingston Seagull

Author: Richard Bach

Jonathan Livingston Seagull is no ordinary bird. He believes it is every gull’s right to fly, to reach the ultimate freedom of challenge and discovery, finding his greatest reward in teaching younger gulls the joy of flight and the power of dreams.

This is a story for people who follow their hearts and make their own rules; people who get special pleasure out of doing something well, even if only for themselves; people who know there’s more to this living than meets the eye: they’ll be right there with Jonathan, flying higher and faster than ever they dreamed.

“We can lift ourselves out of ignorance, we can find ourselves as creatures of excellence and intelligence and skill.”

“He was not bone and feather but a perfect idea of freedom and flight, limited by nothing at all”

Composed by the Secretary of H.V. Ockham

Volume 5, number 8
