Refugees and immigrants are an almost constant subject in current news, and refugee policy is one of the most controversial and long-standing issues in Dutch politics. The SympCie is organizing a debate on the subject, on the 22nd of March. Ringo Ossewaarde, associate professor in sociology at UTwente, will first explain the most important myths and realities of the refugee situation; afterwards, there will be opportunity for discussion on the subject.

Would you like to share your views on the subject with other Ockhammers? Do you want to actively participate in a SympCie activity? Or do you just want to know whether the newspapers are telling you the truth about the situation?

Did you know the answer to last month’s riddle? If you did, congratulations! If not, the answer to the question was as follows:

Take one coin from pile 1, two from pile 2, 3 from pile 3, and so on. You know how much the sum of the coins should weigh. If their actual weight is off by one hundredth of an ounce, you will know that the pile 1 is the faulty set, and if it is off by two hundredth of an ounce, pile 2 is the faulty one, and so on.

The New Riddle is as follows:

There are three bags. The first bag has two blue rocks. The second bag has two red rocks. The third bag has a blue and a red rock. All bags are labelled but all labels are wrong. You are allowed to open one bag, pick one rock at random, see its colour and put it back into the bag, without seeing the colour of the other rock.

How many such operations are necessary to label all the bags correctly?

Book: Rage of Angels

Author: Sydney Sheldon

Published in 1980, Rage of Angels revolves around the young attorney Jennifer Parker, as she rises to become a successful lawyer even after being framed for threatening the chief witness against a Mafia boss by mistakenly giving him a dead canary with a broken neck. This in turn leads to a situation that promises to break her life’s dreams. As the story progresses, the protagonist is romantically torn between a famous politician who helps her rise again, and a Mafia boss, the man that framed her, who swears to destroy her after he finds out about her affair with the politician; an affair that was short-lived, and yet long enough to gift her a son.

“I was scared. Do you know what it’s like to hold someone else’s life in your hands? It’s like playing God. Can you think of anything scarier than that?”

“But she was looking into the past, trying to understand when it was that all the laughter died.”

Composed by the Secretary of H.V. Ockham

Volume 5, number 7
